SUMMARY:Franklin Park Walk: Parks for the Public
DESCRIPTION:Past and Future of open space Franklin Park’s Heathfield\nSunday\, April 28\, 11 am-12 pm\, Meet at the Tennis Courts in front of Shattuck Hospital \nHistoric Franklin Park Map \nHosted by: Franklin Park Coalition\, Emerald Necklace Conservancy \nSave the date for a spring walk in historic Franklin Park and learn about its history and continuing purpose as a public health solution to Boston’s urban challenges. This walk will include the gorgeous new Scarboro Pond Pathways and the area surrounding the current Shattuck Campus site. The park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted\, considered the father of American landscape architecture. \nThe walk will be led by Mark Swartz\, a former National Park Service Ranger at Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site\, the one-time home\, and office of America’s greatest urban park designer. In addition\, an update on the status of the Shattuck Campus will be given by JoAnn Robinson\, chair of the Emerald Necklace Conservancy’s Board of Overseers and a Landscape Historian. \nCurrently\, the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM) is proposing redeveloping the land surrounding the Shattuck Hospital\, as the hospital is moving downtown. This land was historically part of Franklin Park\, called Heathfield. As park advocates\, we are encouraging creative reuse of the space to restore significant open space instead of increasing development. The restoration of public open space is in keeping with Olmsted’s philosophy of parks contributing to public health. We hope to provide much-needed public health-focused recreation opportunities to our community. Learn more about the site and its history in person during the Parks for Public health walk. Snacks provided to start the walk. \nWhile RSVPs are not required\, you can email RSVP@franklinparkcoalition.org to get updates and reminders of the event.

SUMMARY:Lavender Ruins at Fog X Ruins
DESCRIPTION:https://www.emeraldnecklace.org/event/lavender-ruins-2/all/  \nLavender Ruins\n\n\n|Recurring Event (See all)\n\n\n\n\nPlease note: Lavender Ruins may not play if Fog x Ruins is offline. Click here to check on the status of Fog x Ruins and other fog sculptures. \nAn evening concert sound installation by Neil Leonard made in response to Fog x Ruins\, Fujiko Nakaya’s site-specific fog sculpture for Franklin Park’s Overlook Shelter Ruins\, the site where Elma Lewis invited Duke Ellington to perform annually for Playhouse in the Park. \nLeonard’s composition fills the site of Nakaya’s dancing fog and lighting design by Shiro Takatani\, with sound that also pays tribute to the visionary concepts of Fujiko Nakaya and the sonic imagination of Duke Ellington. The work revisits selected themes by Ellington including Lady of the Lavender Mist\, The Kissing Mist\, Atmosphere (Moon Mist)\, A Blue Fog That You Can Almost See Through (Transblucency)\, The Fog That Clouds It (Schwiphti). As these titles suggest\, the music is atmospheric\, lush and mist-like. The sound is reminiscent of Duke Ellington’s Boston-area born saxophonists\, Harry Carney\, and Johnny Hodges\, who recorded these themes with Ellington and performed with his orchestra in the Ruins. \nThis 20-minute sound installation\, playing at 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm\, comprises an array of speakers located at the Overlook Shelter Ruins surrounding the fog sculpture and audience.
